Ask almost anyone over thirty and they'll tell you the same thing: the years are flying by. Summers that once stretched endlessly now vanish in a blink; a decade feels like it lasted an afternoon. It isn't your imagination, and it isn't a sign that something's wrong. It's a predictable trick of how the mind keeps time — and understanding it can help you slow the clock back down.

Time itself, of course, hasn't changed. A year is still 365 days, and a minute is still sixty seconds. What changes is our perception of duration — and that perception is built by the brain, not measured by a clock. Two main forces explain why it speeds up as we age.

The Proportional Theory

The oldest and simplest explanation is a matter of arithmetic. To a five-year-old, one year is a full fifth of their entire life — an enormous, significant span. Proportional theory is elegant but incomplete — it can't explain why a single dull week can crawl while a packed, novel week races by and then feels long in hindsight. That's where memory comes in. Researchers increasingly point to encoding density: how richly the brain records a stretch of time. The denser the memories, the longer the period seems when we look back on it. Proportion sets the backdrop; memory does the real work.

Novelty, Routine, and the Density of Memory

Think about your first day at a new job, or arriving in a foreign city. Everything demands attention because everything is unfamiliar. Your brain, encountering novelty, encodes a flood of fresh detail — sights, sounds, small uncertainties, new faces. The result is a richly textured memory.

Now think about your commute last Tuesday. If it was identical to every other Tuesday, you may remember almost nothing distinct about it at all. When experience is routine, the brain has little new to record. It runs on autopilot, filing the familiar under "same as before" and storing very little.

This matters because childhood and early adulthood are saturated with firsts: first day of school, first kiss, first job, first time living alone, first country visited. Those years lay down dense, detailed memories. As we get older, life settles into established patterns — the same route, the same work, the same faces — and the brain encodes far less. Fewer distinct memories per year means each year leaves a thinner trace.

Why Novel Time Feels Long in Hindsight

Here's the curious asymmetry at the heart of it. We judge how long a period was, in retrospect, partly by how much we remember happening in it. This produces a counterintuitive split between living through time and looking back on it.

  • A boring afternoon can feel agonisingly slow while you're in it — yet shrink to almost nothing in memory, because so little was worth encoding.
  • A thrilling, novel holiday can race by in the moment — yet expand in memory, feeling like it lasted far longer than the days it occupied, because it left so many distinct markers behind.

This is why a week of travel can feel, months later, longer than the three unremarkable weeks of work that followed it. The brain isn't counting days; it's weighing how much it has to recall. A life full of repeated, interchangeable days compresses into a blur — and a blur feels short.

There may be a perceptual layer too. Some researchers suggest that as we age, subtle changes in how rapidly we take in and process new images and impressions could make the external clock seem to tick faster relative to our internal sense of time. The evidence here is less settled than the memory explanation, and it's wise to treat it as a contributing idea rather than a proven mechanism. But it points in the same direction: the felt pace of time is something the brain constructs, not something it simply reads off the world.

How to Slow Time Back Down

The genuinely useful part: if routine compresses time and novelty expands it, then the felt length of your life is partly within your control. You can't add hours to the day, but you can change how densely you live them.

  • Seek out the new. Take an unfamiliar route, learn a skill, visit somewhere you've never been. Novelty forces the brain to pay attention and record — and recorded time is time you'll feel you lived.
  • Break the autopilot. Even small disruptions to routine — a different café, a new hobby, meeting different people — create fresh memory markers that give a week texture.
  • Be fully present. Attention is the gateway to encoding. Time spent half-distracted barely registers; time spent truly engaged leaves a mark.
  • Mark the milestones. Photos, journals, and noting first-times give the brain anchors to hang memories on, so a year doesn't dissolve into sameness.

Time doesn't actually speed up — your life just gets more predictable, and predictable time leaves almost nothing behind to remember. The years feel short because, in memory, they are short.
